The Penetrating Imager with Vehicle Window Penetration simplifies non-contact vehicle inspection for border military police. Border military police inspect vehicles at fixed checkpoints and temporary entry points where a passing car can hide handguns, long rifles, bladed weapons, drugs, or bulk cash. The driver sits behind a windshield and side windows, and many of those windows are tinted or covered by factory privacy glass. Rain, road dust, and exterior damage further reduce visibility. An officer who tries to see the cabin through the glass is often looking into a dark reflection. To make a complete search, the established procedure requires the driver to lower each window and open each door. At that moment, all protective distance is given up. An offender can push a weapon through the opening or release volatile material. Exposure to airborne drugs and infectious hazards is a secondary risk. Waiting drivers see the lengthy process and grow impatient, so checkpoint flow slows down. The critical need is to acquire a clear picture of the cabin before a direct approach. The Penetrating Imager is developed for that pre-contact step. The Penetrating Imager is an active optical instrument that uses laser range-gated imaging to see through automotive glazing. It is composed of a high-repetition-rate pulsed laser, an image-intensified gated camera with built-in MCP image intensifier and high-voltage and timing modules, a beam expander, and an imaging lens. Rather than relying on ambient light, the Penetrating Imager sends a short pulse from its own pulsed laser into the target vehicle. The gated camera opens an optical shutter for a very short period after the pulse has travelled to the selected cabin depth and reflected back. This time gate suppresses scattered light from the outer pane, surface rain, or airborne dust along the optical path. The operating mode applied for this border task is Vehicle Window Penetration. This setting permits see-through vehicle glass imaging at useful distances and works when the glass is heavily tinted. It does not require the window to be open, and the entire method remains in the optical spectrum. At a border lane, the Penetrating Imager is positioned behind a protective barrier alongside the stop point. The vehicle pulls in and its engine switches off. The operator keeps the driver under visual control, selects the range-gate distance for the cabin interior, and points the imager through the windshield or the front side glass. The target image appears within seconds. A handgun under a coat on the passenger seat, a knife wedged between the seat cushion and the centre console, or suspicious wires attached to a dashboard panel become visible. If the view from one side is blocked by the steering wheel or an occupant, another angle can be obtained from the rear side-window area without anyone leaving the vehicle. The rear seat area can be observed in the same manner through the rear glazing. Each frame reveals specific zones that need attention, giving a solid basis for a controlled and targeted inspection. The task often continues after dark, and perimeters, streetlights, checkpoint floodlights, and vehicle headlights produce mixed illumination. The Penetrating Imager creates its own short light pulse, so day-and-night transitions do not require different hardware. The gate can also be adjusted away from bright reflections, because light returning from outside the selected range window is excluded. A tactical visual check through automotive glass can be repeated from several angles before any close approach. By keeping the inspection team behind the barrier, the device changes the sequence of high-risk stops: the cabin is imaged for hidden threats while the person inside remains separated from the officer. The Penetrating Imager with Vehicle Window Penetration simplifies non-contact vehicle inspection for border military police, turning an apparently dark car into a clearly visible and manageable scene.
